Homemade and Heart-Healthy Snacks

Even when you’re on the go, homemade, heart-healthy snacks are always a great way to stay fit and healthy.

Recently, the word “snack” has become associated with “junk food”. Now it’s time for a twist – snacks don’t have to be high-calorie, high-sugar, high-fat indulges bought from a machine or a drive-through. You can make delicious snacks from your own kitchen and be eaten while on the go.

According to Kathy McManus, director of nutrition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, snacks are a great way to slip more fruits and veggies in your diet. However, you need to make sure that your snacks vary so you don’t get bored. Powerful snacks include fruits or veggies with a bit of protein and sometimes a whole grain.

A few examples of heart-healthy snacks to take on the go include nuts, fruit and yogurt, apples and peanut butter, hummus and veggies, DIY fro-yo, DIY pizza, oatmeal, and edamame.
