Knowing the Benefits and Health Risks of Beer and Wine

Several medical studies over the past years have shown that alcohol has proven health benefits. But alcohol should be taken in moderation, about one or two drinks a day or three to four days a week.

“There’s no question that people who drink moderately have lower rates of heart attacks, lower rates of diabetes, and live longer,” said Dr. Eric Rimm, associate professor in the departments of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Even most cardiologists agree that drinking alcohol in moderation is beneficial.

In one study, it was found out that both beer and wine consumption protect bone mineral density in men and women. However, it has also been said that one or two drinks of alcohol may also pose risks. It can lead to binge drinking and alcoholism, and increase the risk of breast cancer in women and liver damage.
